Councillor Abdul Jabbar is the Deputy Leader of Oldham Council. With more than 25 years’ experience as a councillor, he has been the council’s Cabinet Member for Finance since 2011 and is also responsible for Oldham’s Climate Change Strategy. His portfolio deputy is Cllr George Hulme.

Councillor Jabbar has been an elected councillor for Coldhurst ward since 1994 and was the first councillor of Bangladeshi heritage to be elected in the whole North West of England. In 2004 he became the youngest ever Mayor of Oldham and was later named Mayor of the Year. He is a senior councillor who has held many different positions within the council. He is a Director of the Local Government Information Unit and a long-standing governor of Oldham College. In 2017 his contribution to the borough was recognised when he received an MBE for his political and public service.

He is a qualified Housing Manager and Fellow of the Charted Institute of Housing. He studied at the University of Salford where he gained an MSc in Housing Management. He is married with 3 children.
