When Cllr Sean Fielding became leader of the council in May 2018 one of his first priorities was the regeneration of Oldham town centre. Building on successes like the Old Town Hall redevelopment, Oldham Labour are determined that the town centre will be a place that thrives. While across the country retail centres are struggling as more and more shopping takes place online or out of town, Oldham has huge potential as a town that mixes retail with leisure, culture, residential, green and commercial spaces.

Over the last year significant progress has been made. From the recent announcement of an agreement with Lidl and Travelodge to develop the Prince’s Gate site at Oldham Mumps, to a high street that is currently almost completely full, to a vibrant events schedule, the town centre is on the up. At the cabinet meeting on 24th June we took another crucial step, with approval of a town centre vision document. The vision sets a course to make Oldham a place that thrives by:

  •  building quality homes
  • exploring opportunities to learn, develop new skills and gain employment
  • having a diverse cultural, leisure and night-time economy
  • attracting, retaining and growing business
  • providing a safe, healthy and friendly environment
  • being green
