Government figures published by DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) show that Oldham has shot up the table for recycling and is in the top four across England for the biggest year on year improvement.

Oldham improved recycling by 9.8% in 2021/22 compared to the previous year.  Oldham households recycled 416.9kg on average, a recycling rate of 46.5%.

This improved performance has helped Greater Manchester to an overall achievement of 50.8% recycling – the sixth highest Waste Disposal Authority in England. Oldham is now in the top third of recycling rates as an individual Council.

Councillor Hannah Roberts, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said ‘This is good for Oldham and good for the planet and the result of a big effort made by Oldham’s Labour Council. Don’t Trash Oldham included internal service improvements in managing waste and reporting as well as the clean up of every ward. All this hard work by residents, Council staff and Labour Councillors is showing measurable improvements. And every bit of recycling helps keep waste disposal costs down for Oldham Council Tax payers.

‘I know we need to do more. The next phase of Don’t Trash Oldham will crack down on persistent fly tipping and target littering hotspots. Oldham Labour promises to set up an Environmental Crime Team to up our game in enforcement and make criminals and the people responsible for littering our neighbourhoods pay. We will work more closely with other land owners, like Housing Associations, to make the most of our joint resources to keep Oldham clean.
Labour’s Don’t Trash Oldham campaign has made a difference and our new plans will build on this success.’
